one left standing

the guns were a-popping
but they weren't stopping
the approach of the enemy
despite all this gunning
I just started running
I guess that was the chicken in me

they grabbed me and hauled me
"deserter" 's what they called me
they took out their losses on me
pointing at me with their rifles
I'm just thinking of odd trifles
and gettin ready for eternity
cos there'll be no one left standing
after the gun smoke clears
there'll be dust and blood
and the tears that will run
but not for an outlaw like me
I'll just take whatever they hand me
there's worse I could fear
And when they're all done
under the noon-day sun
there'll be no one left standing with me
there's no rectifying,
ain't no denying
what ya do with a soldier like me
I'm a lot worse than most
who never leave their post
but just stand there sleeping
nothing but excuses
for being at las cruces
fallin down onto my knees
it ain't no fiction
some kind of interdiction
was being offered to me
cos there'll be no one left standing
after the gun smoke clears
there'll be dust and blood
and the tears that will run
but not for an outlaw like me
I'll just take whatever they hand me
there's worse I could fear
And when they're all done
under the noon-day sun
there'll be no one left standing with me
cos there's only one left standing
after the gun smoke clears
there'll be dust and blood
and the tears that will run
will be shed for the outlaw in me
I'll just take whatever they hand me
their worst I will not fear
for when they're all done
under the noon-day sun
there'll be one left standing with me
