old story, new ending

it's the age old story it's the same old tale afraid to let the world know who i am afraid that love will fail

i can't begin

I can't begin to say all the things i have in here all the things that I love the things that I fear all the pain I've created all the times that I'm elated simply by seeing you smile I can't begin to see all the ways you've endured all the ways you've sighed the ways that you love every time that you've shown me every day you have known me always giving me your smile I can't begin to tell all the ways that I love you all the ways that I want to discover more more of your treasures more of your pleasures more ways to make you smile This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

passant mon amie redux

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

I smiled

I smiled when I read you love me because I knew deep down that it is true And there's safety there in your love and care And that's part of what I love about you I smiled when you said I was welcome to recline by your side any time It's a great place to be It feels like just you and me And there's no reason to get in line I smiled when I heard you softly whisper though I didn't catch what you said I knew it was just for me and that eventually I'd get it straight in my head I'm smiling now as I write these words down As I imagine you're smiling back at me Reaching toward each other One deep hug and then another Holding tightly and yet setting free This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

I've got the top zipped down, the doors stowed away The weatherman says it's a perfect day For an evening drive To where the road gets high

fare thee well

i've been driving too close for comfort going too fast for the shape the road's in listening to NPR as a last resort to distract me in my thinkin I shouldn't be behind a steering wheel I don't even have my belt on And I'm driving just like I feel Now I know that you're gone no matter what you say I won't fare well there's nothing good about this goodbye keepin it in, so no one can tell That inside I'm starting to die there are so many songs about goodbyes and each poet has a jerker to tell and though the ending is not a surprise no one is ever going to fare well At work I'm holding everything up they say production has taken a dive but no one sees my trembling lip or the pain as it starts to arrive this aching doesn't go very well with operating heavy machinery but there's no caution on a bottle or a pharmacist to warn me no matter what you say I won't fare well there's nothing good about this goodbye keepin it in, so no one can t

blues #1207

There's a reason we sing the blues There's a reason grown men cry We were all born for trouble As surely as the sparks fly It's the reason that I'm turning The path that I've run It's the reason I'm returning To the place where I'd begun When I was just a young boy Looking far far ahead There was nothing I couldn't enjoy Until the day I was dead Now I've gotten older I've tossed out my canvas shoes My feet have gotten colder And I'm learning how to play the blues There's a reason we sing the blues There's a reason grown men cry We were all born for trouble As surely as the sparks fly It's the reason that I'm turning The path that I've run It's the reason I'm returning To the place where I'd begun The last things in life are best If they've been there from the first Whatever fails the shaking test I'll just toss in the hearse I always want to sit with you Stare at stars in the dark if that's not

Christmas thing

All the lights are on the tree, and I am on the couch It feels like a lot of work to me, but maybe I'm a slouch To hurry and shove, push and rush To get a present for me Doesn't really improve things much Or create a season of peace So let's leave the lights up Give little gifts all year round And then we can all catch up In the extra time we've found We can be better friends we can make better love And the means will bring an end That we'll be more proud of This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

a mystery

You've gotta wonder, gotta scratch your head and squint your eye You've gotta be amazed as you try to figure out the how and why How could love like this ever happen to someone like me? I still haven't figured it out, but I know it's just gotta be It's gotta be a mystery A real who-dun-it A riddle that's hard to unwind It's quite a perplexity But I want it A love like none other I'll find It's confusing, it doesn't make much sense at all this way How you found me, gave me everything I need in my day But I am learning I don't understand everything I see And I see that your love is what I needed to be free It's gotta be a mystery A real who-dun-it A riddle that's hard to unwind It's quite a perplexity But I want it A love like none other I'll find Now I'm thinking, this is a mystery I don't want to end Don't want to figure out how I came to have such a great friend I want all the usual suspects in one place at one ti

goodbye in your eyes

Don't say a word, because your eyes say everything to me They speak volumes of your longing to be free Though you might deny, it's really hard to disguise That far away look of goodbye in your eyes. It's taken a while to finally realize that all this is gonna end It's not that I'm dumb, I'm just slow to comprehend Why this is the only way, why there's no compromise And why that far away look of goodbye is in your eyes. Wave to me just to let me know it was real But don't say a word about the things your eyes can't conceal It's not fair, but we never thought life would be I'm prepared, but I'm not saying goodbye willingly It was gonna be fun, I thought we could keep it that way But it's hard, and now I can see that you're backing away Though I see it plain, to my heart it's still a surprise To see that far away look of goodbye in your eyes. Wave to me just to let me know it was real But don't say a word about the things y

Office Christmas Party (to the tune of Winter Wonderland)

For quite a while I'd been thinking Of her smile And my heart sinking Believing that she wouldn't go with me To the office Christmas party I didn't dare even ask her But she's there, I walked past her I'm was sure she wouldn't see Somebody like me at the office Christmas party Then I saw her coming through the doorway, walking through the crowd right toward me I stood there frozen thinkin "no way!" There must be someone else that she sees! But then she yelled, "Hey there mister!" And I could tell, she knew I'd missed her She smiled right at me So everyone could see us at the office Christmas party Why me? I still don't know But she led me to the mistletoe And on our way out, She gave a goodbye shout To the people at the Christmas party We didn't exactly go for a sleigh ride We walked in the snow for a long time I know I had a smile that I couldn't hide She said yes when I asked her to be mine We walk back in, I'm holding h

new life

winter's chill, year's end mind's turned toward months ahead and years behind and the strength of a friend build new, keep the best let fall what should not stand as it shakes new things rise from the dust bird of myth, wheat's grain fall, hibernate in silent pallor decayed away and not the same come again This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

Night-time instructions

"take a deep breath." I did "hold it.." I tried. "don't bite your lip." I bit "let it out slowly." I sighed. And then I went to bed. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

giddy diddy (my nod to hip hop)

there's nothing sentimental in what I have to say it's just the feeling that I get every day when she's near me can you hear me? there's just a phrase running through my mind you know i'm not really the word-man kind listen to me and you'll see there's something essential always gettin in the way and keeps the words from coming into play but i'll try now: she is wowie-kazowie This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

the objection

the ideas are there: tall, strong like barriers of will and long they have stood and long they will remain now with syllabic tempoed care new ideas form and are brought to bear and navigate deep into the brain and so the objections fall, addressed or bought by the salesman's call This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

when i get there

when i get there, I will find that there's another place to go, just ahead When I get there, I will still cherish the things behind that I have shed When I get there, a I'll sing a song of deliverance and peace When I get there, I'll listen to words of redemption and release As I go there, I will emjoy any who cheer or travel with me But what matters is that, in going, I am moving toward the fulfillment of the design in me. really something

everybody's looking for something, and some eventually find the something they've been looking for is just a state of mind an answer from a guru, requests for the wishing wells but me, actually, I have been looking for something else looking for the warm welcome the one every heart needs looking for the piece that fits just right here inside of me didn't care much for the ordinary wouldn't settle for the run of the mill always hoped there was gonna be more than come what will always looking for the challenge, but hoping it was packed with fun wondering if it's too much to ask to have it all, rolled into one I have met some uncommon girls actually, there were quite a few, and though every one of them was great only one was really gonna do spent a lot of time workin on me trying as hard as I can to make myself a better catch to make me a different man finally in the middle of the crowd I found the one who welcomed me with love for what I really was who wanted me to be

make my day

I dragged myself out of bed this morning dreading the daily grind Stopped and startin in the traffic churning with too many things on my mind Get to work to face that pile of yesterday's things to do and thinking all the while I'd rather be home with you The boss walks in growlin and cussin Bout a customer who's a pain I see his mouth movin, but don't hear the fussin Cos I'm thinking once again How you make my day You do it every time In every thing you say You tell me everything's gonna be fine So come what may I'm just glad to know you're mine Cos when I'm tired of it all You make my day I've gotta pay the bills without enough money Choosin who I'm gonna make wait Tunin the car is so overdue it ain't funny And our Visa's on the highest rate But when I stare at the ceiling trying to figure it all I am losing hope Till I hear your call And you make my day You do it every time In every thing you say You tell me everything's gonna

turn

when you walk in, heads turn around when you speak, your words turn into sounds just like an angel tune when you go by, you turn my feet when you turn and look, a smile so sweet fills the entire room there's absolutely no doubt you can turn me inside out turn my heart completely so turn me turn me the sky turns gray when you're gone life turns stale if you're too long gone away from me when i find you, it all turns to spring your eyes turn everything around green when you see me there's absolutely no doubt you can turn me inside out turn my heart completely so turn me turn me i'll take my turn and win or lose risk turning this song into the blues i can sing those well but you will help, I know I'll learn to follow whichever way you turn but time will tell there's absolutely no doubt you can turn me inside out turn my heart completely so turn me turn me This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United Sta

passant mon ami / passant mon amie

whispers fade into silence days crawl into the nights memories rise from experience like vaporous mists in pale light clinging now to the laughter still lingering in my mind the smiling eyes that came after each and every time gone away but never forgotten nursing hope that one day I'll see the love that we each have sought, and the loving eyes of my friend, mon amie This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

when asked how I was doing

Image
I couldn't cry; I could only stare at the wall, the floor, the ceiling and feel my mouth dry up like cracking dirt in the desert. One thought tied to another, not by logic but with threads of memories, frayed from being poked through confined holes of propriety and accommodation, All starting to collapse like a painfully slow rendition of a "Die Hard: Love Hides" mega-explosion with crashing, crunching concrete bouncing noiselessly. I couldn't cry; I could only say that all is well, ok, fine and getting better -- a lie revealed by the tears in my eyes. can I say I love you one more time?

If I lose my voice, am unable to write IF I get snowed in, and miss my flight Could you remember my "I love you" from the last time? If I was gone tomorrow, or you were gone today In the midst of the sorrow, could you hear me say "I love you" there in the back of your mind? I want to make sure we never forget I hope I've said it a lot, but I wanna get it burned deep inside your head so you'll hear it every night before you go to bed Can I say I love you just one more time? Will it matter if it doesn't rhyme? Can I say "I love you" one more time? One more time...... I'm totally flipped out, yeah, I'm crazy about you And there's no doubt, I'm a bit ga-ga too I just wanna shout, Hey, I love you! Can I say "I love you" one more time? Will it matter if it doesn't rhyme? Can I say "I love you" one more time? One more time.... This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative

winter dreams

Plans wait as snow piles high. When winter's past, release a sigh and wake from the achingly long slumber. Smile at the changes, the scent of cucumber, brought again with summer's air, and forget the chill winter was ever there. Plans fulfilled with a new season: What now is planted with hope beyond reason comes after icy hardness and pain, and the cutting plow of spring and rain. When all in rows are there aligned right, finally come the dreams of this winter night. take me

When I wake up to the morning din and feel the pillow's sag beneath my head, The twist of the blanket around my ankles, The warm spot left by the restless dog now outside. I hear the whispering whistle of water rushing Through pipes growing hotter The raspy scrape of snow shovels and the beating of my heart. Take me. I'll keep my eyes closed to the dim lit world and I will linger with you. Fill my day as well as my night, Be with me at waking and in sleep. Keep me warm from the chill with your love and kindness; Invite me always toward you; Take my hand. I want to greet each morning with you, wake to find you at night, talk to you every day, not from afar, but at each meal, each chore, each job, each dog walk, each song, each dance, each book, each idea. Take me. I'm yours. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License

here in mid america

Hot dusty summers and gooseberry pies Wild dogs in the corn, puffy blue skies, The warm crispy sheet after it hangs and dries Gettin the pump primed after fifteen tries That sweet smell from the hog farm across the way, Gettin caught in Deere lights at the end of the day. Not minding the comments that some folks say Bowing our heads before the meal to pray. And it was right here in mid-America far beyond suburbia's sprawl In mid-Illinois right next to Iowa Yes we were poor, but we had it all Cos we grew up knowing exactly what it takes to live and love and do it well and celebrate everything in life that makes a story that's worth the tellin to tell Midwinter night trips to the outhouse chill Shooting pigeons off the silo down at the mill Flirtin with the girls from up in the window sill Too afraid to ask her even if I know she will Went to the big city to go to school Found out that farm boys weren't that cool I learned a lot of stuff and became a fool When I forgot one si

run away

Come on, let's run away tonight Put all those troubles out of sight See what adventures we can find Under a star-filled sky It's time to kick up the dust It's time to stop making a fuss About the cold out there Let's find a way We'll get it all together once again We'll not let the weather do us in Cos we've got that glowin Goin on inside We'll sit by the fire and sing our songs We'll find out which humans are just cylons Our feet propped up on the coffee table Hey why don't you just slide over here There's somethin I wanna show ya dear It's here in my hand and it's for you Fun times sittin just 'round the bend Grabbin on to your hand and then I"ll swing you around On the dance floor We'll get it all together once again We'll not let the weather do us in Cos we've got that glowin Goin on inside We'll sit by the fire and sing our songs We'll find out which humans are just Cylons Our feet propped up on the c
