fare thee well

i've been driving too close for comfort
going too fast for the shape the road's in
listening to NPR as a last resort
to distract me in my thinkin

I shouldn't be behind a steering wheel
I don't even have my belt on
And I'm driving just like I feel
Now I know that you're gone
no matter what you say I won't fare well
there's nothing good about this goodbye
keepin it in, so no one can tell
That inside I'm starting to die
there are so many songs about goodbyes
and each poet has a jerker to tell
and though the ending is not a surprise
no one is ever going to fare well
At work I'm holding everything up
they say production has taken a dive
but no one sees my trembling lip
or the pain as it starts to arrive

this aching doesn't go very well
with operating heavy machinery
but there's no caution on a bottle
or a pharmacist to warn me
no matter what you say I won't fare well
there's nothing good about this goodbye
keepin it in, so no one can tell
That inside I'm starting to die
there are so many songs about goodbyes
and each poet has a jerker to tell
and though the ending is not a surprise
no one is ever going to fare well
