I know it's long

I know it's long.
Will you be gone
when this song
has finally been sung?

It takes time
to unwind,
to lay aside
all that's been done.

I won't ask you
to hang around
to see what
comes around,
or watch the cowboy ride
out of town
at sunset.

But if you're lingering,
You'll hear guitars sing;
Feel all the beating
of the rhythms in my heart.

And if I happen to be
fortunate enough to see
you there for me,
you can help me start

to write a new song,
one we can sing along,
as I lay my head upon
the place where it belongs.

We'll say some better words;
leave the dangerous fjords;
tie some tighter cords.
Do all that love affords.
It takes time
to unwind,
to lay aside
all that's been done.

I know it's long.
Will you be gone
when this song
has finally been sung?

Can we write a new song,
one we can sing along?
Can I lay my head upon
the place where it belongs?

We'll say some better words;
leave the dangerous fjords.
Tie some tighter cords;
do all that love affords

I know it's long.
