back to basics again

out on the court the score's looking grim
all my shots are thunking there on the rim
the coach looks at me and I look at him
as I head for the bench

after the game the coach pulls me aside
sets me down on the bench to set me right
we can get past this really off night
with a simple cure
get back to the basics, son
it's the simple things
that can keep us from being
all we can be
go back to the start, and start again
find yourself from beginning to end
go back
back to the basics again

I drove to the college in my home-made truck
a 51 body held together by luck
wind blowin my hair didn't matter much
my stetson stayed on

the dreams of those years fell away
chasin status and the take-home pay
now I'm wondering how it got this way
and I hear him say
get back to the basics, son
it's the simple things
that can keep us from being
all we can be
go back to the start, and start again
find yourself from beginning to end
go back
back to the basics again

so I'm pounding the pavement with the ball
a new stetson hangin on the rack in the hall
and there's a truck waiting for me on a lot
that needs some care
I'm going back to the basics
it's the simple things
that can keep me from being
all I can be
I'm back at the start, starting again
finding myself from beginning to end
I'm back
back to the basics again
