this old guitar and new

Took the old guitar from its case
Lovingly touched the shaded varnish on its face
Remembering the first time I saw it in the store
The time when I wanted nothing more

Through years it had responded well to my hand
But now simple stress was more than it could stand
When it snapped Bobby said it couldn't be restored
I could look at it, but not play it any more

This old guitar, for these 35 years
Has seen love lush and dry, seen the tears
The songs it played from the very start
Were songs that said what was on my heart
Songs of life and songs of praise
Songs that took me through these days
Songs to watch love fade away

This old guitar, have to put it away
My friends tell me its best this way
Let those years and the wood rest
Set aside the sad and remember the best

Now I've found a sweet sweet blonde
One that will love being part of the songs
That have come with new joys and new tears
One that will help me say what's in here

This old guitar, for these 35 years
Has seen love lush and dry, seen the tears
The songs it played from the very start
Were songs that said what was on my heart
Songs of life and songs of praise
Songs that took me through these days
Songs to watch love fade away
Now I've found a sweet sweet blonde
One that will love being part of the songs
That have come with new joys and new tears
One that will help me say what's in here
