long obedience

"The essential thing in 'heaven and earth' is that there should be a long obedience in the same direction; there results, and has always resulted in the long run, something which has made life worth living." -Friedrich Nietzsche

each new day
brings the joys
of discovering what will be done and said
come what may
my heart knows
the battles begin before I'm out of bed

all of the distractions
from the the core of what's good and true
all of the attractions
that take my eyes off you
it's a daily grind,
but it is mine
and it keeps the brew fresh and good
and by living
with what's been given
I create life as I should
a life, that upon inspection,
turns out to be
long obedience in the same direction
in coming days
I can be sure
I will see another escape attempt
fraudulent claims
can not endure
scrutiny of wise and sober judgment
it's a daily grind,
but it is mine
and it keeps the brew fresh and good
and by living
with what's been given
I create life as I should
a life, that upon inspection,
turns out to be
long obedience in the same direction
for the joy
set before me
I'll endure to the end of my days
if i can go
my heart completely
satisfied with only one word of praise
then this daily grind,
though it is mine
only keeps the brew fresh and good
and by living
with all I've been given
I create life as I should
a life, that upon inspection,
turns out to be
long obedience in the same direction
