road trip

I've got the white line and horizon
To keep me company
I'm gonna just keep on drivin
Till the distance sets me free
From the memories of the nights and days
We spent together in those years
From the echos of your whispers
and the stain of your tears

Another mile marker flashes by me unseen
Billboards tell me the next exit
Has the best dinosaurs I've ever seen
The radio stations fade in and out
but the songs are always the same
as the ones you used to download for me
And now it's starting to rain
There's not enough distance
between the shores of Myrtle Beach and LA
To help me make any sense
of why you left me alone that day
I know I have no defense
and all my excuses are so lame
I'm just hoping that this road trip
can get me back on the right road again

Another stop to fill it up
and guzzle some more caffeine
The cruise control keeps me going fast
Even through the wind and the rain
Those clouds forming in the distance
take on a familiar shape
And the rainbow in the rearview mirror
Reminds me of the amazing grace
There's not enough distance
between the shores of Myrtle Beach and LA
To help me make any sense
of why you left me alone that day
I know I have no defense
and all my excuses are so lame
I'm just hoping that this road trip
can get me back on the right road again
Did I say that I had
some specific place to go?
I've crossed the endless plains
on into Colorado
By the time I get to Flagstaff
I might actually begin to feel
Like the 3:10 to Yuma
isn't such a bad deal
There's not enough distance
between the shores of Myrtle Beach and LA
To help me make any sense
of why you left me alone that day
I know I have no defense
and all my excuses are so lame
I'm just hoping that this road trip
can get me back on the right road again
