this last ride

Went up to the ranch, just to get away for awhile
Folks at the X Diamond really go that extra mile
Don't ask questions, though by their looks I think they know
That something's happening, cos I'm going riding all alone


Following the trail without thought, the horse knows the way
Flies buzzing, the swish of the tail, not much more to say
Till I came to the clearing where we had been
And it all came back to me one more time again

There you were looking fabulous in that sassy hat
Those crazy sunglasses, Fat Baby Ariats
Your laughter and your smile lighting up the mountainside
How can I forget that last ride?

There's the charred circle on the ground
Where we kept each other warm and made our smores
There's the tree that made us feel like we were at heaven's door
There's the ledge where we sat to watch the stars go around
And here's the place where we pitched our tent and laid down

Turned around to ride back down to the stable
Thinking it wasn't such a good idea that I came
When I heard a sound that I would never forget
Coming from just there beyond the bend

There you were, riding your favorite mare
The sunshine getting brighter from your hair
Riding with a man whose look was gentle and strong
I know it's right, but my heart felt all wrong
