gonna get that girl

From the time she could talk
She was doin it fast
From the time she could walk
Weren't any fences she wouldn't pass
From the first time that I first saw her
that's when I began to see
some day I'm gonna get that girl
or maybe someday she'll get me

runs by pigtails flyin
racing down the street
left the boy next door cryin
Thank God it wasn't me
There's somethin there I admire
Call it that stubborn streak
some day I'm gonna get that girl
or maybe someday she'll get me

my momma always told me
"son, that girl is crazy"
my dad always warned me
"That girl is quite a pill"
And each Sunday School morning
Miss Kay told her to sit still
but some day I'm gonna get that girl
or maybe someday she'll get me

later on she fell for a boy
Fell like a chain-sawed tree
I knew he just wanted a toy
She wouldn't listen to me
And when she ran past me crying
it wasn't what i wanted to see
but some day I'm gonna get that girl
or maybe someday she'll get me

She was gone a long time
Went so very far away
Left town with the wrong guy
She didn't see it that way
In a random place, a random time
I bumped into her the other day
This may be the day I get that girl
Or it may be the day she gets me

Now we're here on the couch
talkin how things have gone
She's trying to figure out
exactly where I came from
But I never let her out of my heart
waitin for her to come home to me
but today I have gotten this girl --
I know today she's gettin me
