she can't hide

across the table, one more time
about to cry, but "i'm doing fine"
there's a look in her eyes
she can't hide

it's hard to ignore the telltale sign
muted behind the next glass of wine
but it's still a cry
she can't hide
wondering one more time
why he left her there
looking for a sign
that maybe he still cares
she's seeking out a little bit of hope
that she can't hide
seemed so strong for all of those years,
washed away, a flood of tears
everybody else could see
but she can't hide

he pushes his chair back from the table
puts the napkin down, walks away
a calendar day
she can't hide
wondering one more time
why he left her there
looking for a sign
that maybe he still cares
she's seeking out a little bit of hope
that she can't hide
the bottle's empty, cleared away
for another year, nothing to say
they've made a date
to do this again

is this what comes of just being friends?
loving way beyond the end?
always thinking 'bout him
and keepin it in
wondering one more time
why he left her there
looking for a sign
that maybe he still cares
she's seeking out a little bit of hope
that she can't hide
