Christmas in A Box

take the boxes from the attic
like treasures from the museum
memories come flooding back
and now there's no stopping them

the ornaments hand-made and bought
clothes-pin soldiers all lined up
moons and stars will hang around
next to camels, bears and other stuff

garland tangled with the lights
grapevine wreath for the door
plastic snowman guards the night
shepherds, kings gather once more
but I can't keep Christmas in a box
though the things in there will unlock
thoughts of you being here with me
I'll hold those times here deep inside
they'll get better, just like wine
and I'll sip it longingly
cookies iced and sprinkled
pecans and walnuts cracked
frosted windows and icicles
presents shaken and put back

cinnamon rolls and egg nog
french coffee and chicory blend
a stocking hung for the dog
Christmas carols without end
but I can't keep Christmas in a box
though the things in there will unlock
thoughts of you being here with me
I'll hold those times here deep inside
they'll get better, just like wine
and I'll sip it longingly

I can't keep Christmas in a box
