if and when

When you find you don't have answers,
when you think everything's in smoke,
when you find there are no handles
to hang on to any more

If you're seeing the very bottom,
but you find you are missing depth,
and everything that's on the surface
is really all that you have left

That's when I want to hold you
Tell you what I said once before
But I'm not sure I was getting through
when you went through that door

When you think that you're moving on
when you think you've found what's next
when it seems that it was only wrong
nothing good, better or best

If you think that you are trouble
And you spell it with a capital T
if you still see love in the rubble
glowing with warmth from me

That's when I want to hold you
Tell you what I said once before
But I'm not sure I was getting through
when you went through that door

When you think you have forgotten
And you won't settle for a crescent moon
And money is due the drummer and fifer
And it's time to dance to a new love's tune

If you are still jealous of the sun and wind,
If you can almost taste beauty and grace
if you won't let anything rise from ashes again
and the future's past is a struggle to face

That's when I want to hold you
Tell you what I said once before
I'm going to say it till I get through
and see you walking through this door

That's when I want to hold you
