they say the blues are going around
they say that it's a common thing
and that the important thing is laying them down
before your troubles make you scream

but some things are too hard to let go
some things don't just disappear
like rabbits in the hat at the magic show
or like December 31st every year

ever since I was just a little child
I've always heard my momma say
don't go walkin on the side that's wild
or there will be a piper to pay

And now I hear the music playin
Gettin louder all the time
Drummer has a good beat goin
bass man layin down the bottom line
the brass boy makin my nerves twitter
when he takes those notes up high
and the ivory is moving my soul
the 'lectric strings make me cry
the piper is someone I know
and he want's everything that's inside

preacher's telling me there's a path to walk
says to tread where He has trod
and those glowing footprints there on the path
were made by the sandals of God

don't understand everything he has said
but I'm ready to lay it down
not really sure if that means I'm headed
up to the sky or if I'm going down
