a father goes

down by the border, in a border town
dads and daughters just hanging around
watching the river, knowing it's Grand
and sharing the dreams only fathers understand

that's how it goes with a father
who holds her always in his heart
nothing his little girl asks is a bother
no place she wants to go too far
as he holds her close, he knows it

there's nothing he'll be able to refuse
and when she decides to let go
he'll give her the freedom to choose

out on the porch swing, singing silly songs
staying up past what mom thinks is too long
holding daddy's hand, gripping his fingers

he's slipping away and she starts to cry
it's just to hard to watch him falter and die
so she closes her eyes to remember other days

just  how it was with her father who held her always in his heart
nothing his little girl asked was a bother
no place she wanted  to go too far
as he held her close, he knew it

there's nothing he was able to refuse
and when she decided to let go
he gave her the freedom to choose
