on they merrily go

last night's news was hard to take,
the implications not hard to see,
don't know why, for God's sake,
we become something we can't be

it's not just the naked emptiness
scraping on the walls of your soul --
there's something else we must address
before we discover it's time to go

like teenagers on the black blacktop,
like gamblers on a winning roll,
we're going to run, cannot stop --
and on they merrily go

somewhere deep, in fathoms below
lurks a shadow I've never seen
as soon as it's out where I can know,
I will have a chance of coming clean

it's all elementary, my dear friend,
all earth, wind, water, and fire
the beginning isn't much diff from the end
but getting there takes all your desire

like teenagers on the black blacktop,
like gamblers on a winning roll,
we're going to run, cannot stop --

and on they merrily go
and on they merrily go
